Still Not Important Enough? COVID-19 Policy Views and Vote Choice

Scholars have long been skeptical of citizens’ ability to vote on the basis their policy views. Voters lack incentives pay attention politics and so are often unaware stances adopted by presidential candidates parties. However, some scholars suggested that voter may increase when issues become important them, such as a crisis disrupts lives. The coronavirus pandemic provides an opportunity test this proposition. It is one most severe crises United States has faced. disrupted almost everyone’s lives, many people know someone who tested positive or died from virus. thus salient many—if not most—voters. Despite context, we find voters remain 2020 US Presidential candidates’ policies. Their levels knowledge about typical for other policies, which middling. In absence knowledge, cannot connect views virus with voting decisions.
